Hands-On History: Warp a Loom

  • Compass Inn Museum 1386 U.S. 30 Laughlintown (map)

Learn to weave on a floor loom! Every workshop in this “Intro to Weaving” series covers a different technique, and after every class (except the very first, which deals with set-up) you will go home with your very own handwoven “mug rug” measuring just over 5x5 inches. If you attend multiple classes, you will end up with a coordinating set. In every session, you can choose between several color options and two patterns—one easier and one more difficult—in order to accommodate weavers with different levels of experience.

All workshops will be held in the Barnhart Room at Compass Inn Museum. Classes will last approximately 3 hours, and they are limited to 3 students. All materials included.

If all classes are filled, please email Emily Barth at ebarth@compassinn.org for additional class opportunities.

February 12

Warp a Loom**- 10 am, 1 pm, 3 pm

Are you interested in how pre-industrial tools and machines work? Non-weavers are welcome too! The loom is right up there with the wheel & sail as one of the most significant technological innovations in the history of human civilization. This is a great tactile opportunity to understand the cogs and gears of loom mechanics.

Take part in a full walk-through of how to set up a floor loom before the actual weaving begins. This is the less “glamorous” side of weaving, but it’s a crucial skill that any aspiring weaver must master. This will be a hands-on demonstration of the entire warping process from start to finish. Each session will cover the same process with another loom. Click here to sign up!
