Hands-On History: Intro to Weaving

  • Compass Inn Museum 1386 U.S. 30 Laughlintown (map)

Learn to weave on a floor loom! Every workshop in this series covers a different technique, and after every class (except the very first, which deals with set-up) you will go home with your very own handwoven “mug rug” measuring just over 5x5 inches. If you attend multiple classes, you will end up with a coordinating set. In every session, you can choose between several color options and two patterns—one easier and one more difficult—in order to accommodate weavers with different levels of experience.

All workshops will be held in the Barnhart Room at Compass Inn Museum. Classes will last approximately 3 hours, and they are limited to 3 students. All materials included.

** Denotes a class that is particularly beginner-friendly (but suitable for any level).

If all classes are filled, please email Emily Barth at ebarth@compassinn.org for additional class opportunities.

February 19

Shaker Weaving**, 9 am to 12 pm

The Shaker religious community developed a simple, yet effective style of weaving rugs in the mid-19th century. Although their rugs are simple plainweave in construction, the weft consists of several strands of different colors that are manually twisted together before each throw of the shuttle. The end result has a subtle chevron effect. Click here to sign up!

Clasped Weft**, 1 pm to 4 pm

This fun and user-friendly technique adds an extra flourish to plain weaving, and it’s very common in rag rugs. “Clasped weft” uses two shuttles with contrasting colors. As the weaver, you have creative freedom to create a bold and unique design by choosing the point where the colors interlock in each row. Click here to sign up!
