Hands-On History: Cooking Classes

  • Compass Inn Museum 1386 U.S. 30 Laughlintown (map)

Do you want to learn how to cook in a fireplace? What about a historic beehive oven . . . ever wondered how to bake in one? Please join us on Saturday, April 9th to prepare, cook and enjoy savory and sweet dishes under the guidance of our experienced open hearth and beehive oven cooks.

The class will be held in the historic cookhouse of the Compass Inn Museum where you will participate in the process and assist our cooks in the tasks at hand.  You will experience a variety of cookery techniques and enjoy discussions about 18th and early 19th century food preparation, preservation technology, seasonality, diet, and the availability of local and imported foodstuffs all while cooking scrumptious food that features receipt (recipes) and ingredients inspired by the cuisine of the 18th and 19th century. Once the meal is ready, you will sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labor in the Museum’s candlelit warming kitchen.

Please wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, as we’ll be standing and doing a little bit of heavy lifting. You may also want to bring along an apron, your own knife, and paper and pencil for taking notes.

Registration fee - $80 per person ($75 for members)

Class size - limited to 8 participants ages 16 and up

Register early so you do not miss this unique experience.
