Fireside Chat: PW&S Railroad Hidden Gems & Ramble

Join us on May 2 from 1 to 3:30 pm for this installment of our Fireside Chat series, PW&S Railroad and Ramble. This adventure includes an indoor discussion and an outdoor ramble.

This cozy “Chat” will start in the Common Room of the historic Compass Inn Museum where Thomas Irwin, a member of the Ligonier Valley Railroad Association's Board of Directors will give an overview of the history of the Pittsburgh, Westmoreland, and Somerset Railroad. Even though the line has been gone for over 100 years, it still has a story to tell. Tom will tell that story as he describes and identifies several hidden gems and other lesser-known features that can be rediscovered as part of the railroad’s history.

Then Rachael Mahony, Environmental Education Specialist at Forbes State Forest, part of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry will lead a guided hike along a portion of the old PW&S railroad grade on Laurel Summit. There you will explore the PW&S railroad history, some of the hidden gems, and special points of interest alongside the trail, and the impacts that the railroad had on local communities, as well as nearby forestland.

Admission is $15. Due to limited space the "Chats" are recommended for adults only. Tickets can be purchased the day of the event on location, by phone, or at Eventbrite.

The “Chat” with Tom will last approximately 1 hour, and then we will caravan to Laurel Summit for the hike with Rachel.

Hike details: Please come prepared for an easy to moderate, 1-mile hike along uneven terrain. Be sure to wear sturdy boots or shoes and dress for the weather. LVHS will provide water and snacks. You can bring insect repellent and/or other comfort items for the hour-long outing. If separated from the group while driving to the hike location, please enter the following GPS coordinates into Google Maps for directions to the PW&S parking lot: N 40°06'57.5" W 79°10'31.7".
